The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) launched the Net Zero Aviation and Shipping inquiry in July 2021 to look at how the aviation and shipping sectors can best achieve net zero emissions.

The EAC held an evidence session inviting Dr Tristan Smith, Reader in Energy and Shipping at UCL Energy Institute and Director of UMAS, along with representatives from the shipping industry.

Dr Tristan Smith highlighted missed opportunities in the most recent government publications regarding decarbonisation of shipping and laid out steps that need to be prioritised within the next decade to ensure rapid transition is possible to reach global shipping emissions targets in 2050.

UCL Energy Institute academics Domagoj Baresic, Nishatabbas Rehmatulla, Santiago de la Fuente and Tristan Smith also presented written evidence to the committee on behalf of UCL Energy Institute, UMAS, Decarbonising UK Freight Transport (DUKFT) Network and Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS).
