UCL Energy Institute Reader in Energy and Transport, Dr Tristan Smith and Director Safety & Environment, UK Chamber of Shipping, David Balston will look at the recent policy developments at the United Nations International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on the subject of targets for shipping, which was left out of the UNFCCC COP21 agreement. The presentations will look at the consequences of targets and what options exist for shipping to tread in the 1.5/2 degrees pathway, from a modelling perspective and from the shipping industry viewpoint.

About the speakers:
Dr Tristan Smith, Reader in Energy and Transport has, since 2010, grown a substantial shipping focused energy research group. He was the coordinator for £1.6m Research Councils UK and industry funded project Low Carbon Shipping and is currently the director of £3.5m Research Councils UK and industry funded project called Shipping in Changing Climates. He was Principal Investigator on the Energy Technologies Institute Heavy Duty Vehicle marine program, which produced models for the analysis of the UK shipping related CO2 emissions, and projections of technology uptake for the UK and global fleets. He led the IMO 3rd GHG Study, and is lead author of ISO 19030, which is developing tools for the estimation of trends in hull and propeller performance. His research group’s activities are centered on modeling and analysis of the energy efficiency of the shipping industry, combining detailed models of energy consumption onboard ships with macro analysis of patterns of energy consumption across the global fleet. The group maintains a number of techno-economic models including GloTraM (Global Transport Model), which is used by Rolls-Royce, Shell and Lloyd’s Register to explore shipping’s future scenarios and technology evolution. Along with Dr Simon Davies, he is co-founder of University Maritime Advisory Services (UMAS).
David Balston joined the Chamber of Shipping in 2010 as Director Safety & Environment. His team seeks to deliver a regulatory climate that maintains high environmental and safety standards for British shipping companies without competitive disadvantage. He is also the Director of the British Rig Owner’s Association. In 2014 he was also appointed Director of Policy and as such has responsibility and oversight of all Chamber policy areas. Prior to the Chamber David served in the Royal Navy. He commanded three submarines including a Trident submarine carrying the UK’s strategic deterrent. During a varied career he also worked in the Cabinet Office as the Prime Minister’s adviser on nuclear deterrent, NATO and EU military matters.
