Fuse

UMAS in collaboration with exactEarth have developed a new generation of ship-based reports called FUSE (Fuel Use Statistics and Emissions). FUSE reports are created using the engineering and technological expertise of the UMAS team combined with exactEarth’s Global AIS data. FUSE reports are currently in the beta phase of development and are scheduled for general release in February 2018. During 2018 we aim to produce FUSE reports for any IMO registered vessel over time periods of one calendar year to individual months. To complete the beta phase of FUSE development UMAS has created this FUSE Products page to enable interested companies, organisations and individuals to register their interest in FUSE. Following registration we will be able to provide you with updates on product launch dates and will be in touch to discuss the functionality of our FUSE reports, the nature of your interest and to receive your feedback. As part of this beta development phase UMAS will also be offering limited access to actual FUSE reports on a free trial basis to a number of selected registered parties.

FUSE reports deliver detailed estimates of a ship’s speed, fuel consumption, CO2, NOx and SOx emissions, transport activity and Energy Efficiency Operation Index (EEOI) using satellite and terrestrial AIS data.

Why use FUSE reports:

  • With FUSE reports you can receive data estimates for all major commercial ships operating globally.
  • FUSE reports will be available for the tanker (oil, chemical, and liquefied gas), bulk carrier, and container market segments in January 2017 with general cargo and vehicle ships to be added by mid-2017.
  • You can eliminate the complexity and time it takes to turn AIS and ship specification data into speed, fuel usage, emissions and transport work statistics.
  • You can receive estimates on individual ships identified by IMO number on a monthly or annual basis.
  • FUSE reports are the quickest way for anyone to view estimates of speed, transport work, fuel consumption and emissions from commercial shipping.

Estimates are provided based on a time history of a ship’s activity as observed using satellite and terrestrial AIS data, in combination with engineering and statistical models developed in-house. This mirrors the approach behind tools for estimating fleet emissions statistics (e.g. the Third IMO GHG Study), and has been validated against a series of ship owner reported data to confirm accuracy.

Whilst FUSE reports are not produced using data measured on board a ship and are not intended to replace this data – they are a means to provide an independent estimate obtained from public domain information, made available to anyone.

UMAS was the pioneer in using AIS data to estimate vessel emissions in 2012 and has since then produced several outputs using AIS data:

Third IMO GHG Study 2014          AIS & Shipping Efficiency         Global Ship Map

FUSE reports are provided in different products:

FUSE Vessel | FUSE MRV | FUSE Benchmark | FUSE Fleet | BetterFleet
